There are new details surrounding the death of Instagram influencer Ekaterina Karaglanova.
The 24-year-old, who recently graduated from medical school, was found dead in a suitcase in her Moscow apartment on Friday.
The BBC says prosecutors have released a video of suspect Maxim Gareyev confessing to the crime. The news organization notes that it is unknown if Gareyev had a lawyer present during the confession.
In the video, Gareyev reportedly says, he stabbed her "at least five times in the neck and chest.”
The suspect claims they had an intimate relationship and that he had been giving her money at each of their encounters. He supposedly became upset when she “insulted and humiliated him.”
According to the BBC, Gareyev told authorities, "She told me that I was ugly and that even plastic [surgery] would not help me.” He also claimed that she told him it would take a year to save up the money to be with her again. He said, “I could not stand it.”
Early on in the investigation, authorities had cited the possibility of a jealous former boyfriend.
Karaglanova had reportedly moved on with another man, and was planning a trip to the Netherlands with her new boyfriend and her family to celebrate her 25th birthday.
Her parents grew concerned when they didn’t hear from Ekaterina for several days. Her landlord helped them access her apartment where they found her body inside a suitcase in the hallway.
Karaglanova was a popular Instagram influencer with 100,000 followers. She often shared her travel adventures and recently posted pictures from Greece.
