Last night, “Extra’s” AJ Calloway spoke with actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson at the National Board of Review, days after Oprah Winfrey’s triumphant speech at the Golden Globes.
Everyone in Hollywood and the country are still buzzing about Oprah, even suggesting that she should run for president.
Tom and Rita were front and center for Oprah’s globe speech. Rita shared, “I think it was one of the best speeches of the last 10 years, and it made us realize what we're missing right now in our country in terms of leadership.” Tom quipped, “While she was speaking, out on the patio the Hilton swimming pool the waters actually parted.”
When AJ said he was “all about OT — OT 2020,” Tom smiled and said,“Oprah. Tom.”
Tom acted out how he sees an OT ticket, with his wife playing Oprah, adding, “Watch what I do.”
Rita said, “As President of the United States of America..." with Tom chiming in, “I'm staring at you with open, admiring eyes.” Rita continued, “As the first female black president, I want to say that I have an amazing partner in my vice president.”
Tom commented, “See what I did as vice president? I nodded and gave her all my attention. It was very glowing.”
The couple also had a star collision with Angelina Jolie, who was also in attendance at the event with daughters Shiloh and Zahara. Tom joked before saying hello to their famous mom, “We gotta check those kids IDs.”
In all seriousness, when AJ asked Tom if he would ever consider a political run, the Golden Globes nominee replied, “There's a number of things I would do to serve my country if asked, provided I could actually do the job. I'm not a politician. I dodge phone calls and I try to crack wise out of every difficult situation I have been put in including right now. But Oprah? That is a different case.”
Tom went on, “As long as I get to ride shotgun in Marine 1 twice a month — and that means fly it — the presidential helicopter, with Oprah in the back. I want a helmet and the whole bit. I'm gonna say, 'OT 2020. OT 2020 asking for presidential clearance on the South Lawn. I copy you down Marine 1.' That's me.”
