Denzel Washington has donated $1 million of his own money to re-establish the debate squad at Wiley College, where his new film, "The Great Debaters," takes place.
The big-hearted star proudly premiered the film last night in New York with wife Pauletta by his side. The Oscar-winner stars as a professor who inspires his students to form the school's first debate team in 1935.
The critically-acclaimed movie has also received a Golden Globe nomination, but Denzel told "Extra" he'll have to watch the writers strike closely.
"We'll see what happens," Denzel said, adding that he's not sure if he will attend the ceremony. "Hopefully we won't have to cross that bridge, but we'll see what happens."
