Chris Sullivan Dishes on Toby & Kate’s ‘Rough’ Breakup on ‘This Is Us’

“Extra’s” Katie Krause spoke with Chris Sullivan at the final-season premiere of “This Is Us” in L.A. Tuesday night

On the Season 5 finale, it was revealed that Chris’ character Toby was calling it quits with Kate, played by Chrissy Metz. Chris teased, “Regardless of how it ends for Toby and Kate, it’s going to be handled with compassion.”

Chris also stressed the importance of letting go of the idea of blowing up a relationship to end it.

He went on, “It’s gonna be rough, but everything’s gonna be okay.”

When asked about how Toby feels about Kate’s second marriage, Chris commented, “We’ll let you know once we come up with an idea of how he feels about it.”

Chris admitted it was “not a fun day of work” when he had to film breakup scenes with Chrissy. He added, “To, like, end our relationship is kind of a bummer.”

Will Toby find love this season? Chris answered, “I don’t know the answer to that question.”

Sullivan noted that there will be an “intentional conclusion” at the end of the season. He emphasized, “The audience will be taken care of.”

As for the possibility of a spin-off or movie, Chris said he was “all down for the idea.”

While Sullivan doesn’t have any New Year’s resolutions, he expressed wanting to be “more quiet.”

“This Is Us” returns January 4 on NBC.
