John Cho on Playing 'Star Trek’ Franchise’s First Gay Character

“Extra’s” Renee Bargh recently sat down with John Cho, who is playing the first gay character in the “Star Trek” franchise.

In “Star Trek Beyond,” Cho is taking on the role of Hikaru Sulu, originally played by George Takei. In this version, Sulu is casually presented as gay. Cho said, “The movie doesn’t make a big deal out of it, and hopefully that’s where we're going as a society.”

John’s co-star Zachary Quinto added, "I think LGBT have long advocated for representation in the ’Star Trek’ universe and all of us feel very proud of the fact that we could give them that in this movie and I think it was handled so subtly.”

“Star Trek Beyond” hits theaters July 22.
