Anita Pointer — one of the original Pointer Sisters — died at 74 on New Year's Eve.

Pope Benedict XVI, seen here in 2011, died at 95 on New Year's Eve. Current Pope Francis called him "a noble person" and praised his "sacrifices for the good of the Church." Francis also expressed gratitude "to God for giving him to the Church, and to the world."

Barbara Walters died in December at 93 years old.

Punk fashion icon Vivienne Westwood died December 29 at 81.

Brazilian soccer legend Pelé died at 82. His daughter Kely Nascimento announced the news in an Instagram post, writing, "Everything that we are, is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace." Pelé had been hospitalized in São Paulo for a respiratory infection and for complications related to colon cancer. Prior to his passing, the hospital said his health had worsened as his cancer progressed.

British actor Ronan Vibert, who appeared in such films as "Saving Mr. Banks" (2013), died December 22 following a brief illness.

Glam '60s starlet Diane McBain, known for "Surfside 6" and as Pinky Pinkston on the original "Batman" series, died of liver cancer at 81 on December 21.

Sonya Eddy, a longtime "General Hospital" cast member who also notched memorable appearances on "Seinfeld" in the '90s, died on December 19 at 55.

"Super Sized Salon" reality star Jamie Lopez died at 37 in December.

Stephen "tWitch" Boss, a pro dancer and DJ for Ellen Degeneres' talk show, died by suicide in December 2022.

Cher's mom Georgia Holt died at 96 on December 10.

Helen Slayton-Hughes, who played Ethel Beavers on "Parks and Recreation," died at 92 in December.

Sports journalist Grant Wahl died suddenly at 48 while covering the World Cup in Qatar.

June Blair, a Playboy Playmate and actress on "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet," died at 89 on December 4.

Kirstie Alley, the actresse known for her work on "Cheers" and "Veronica's Closet," not to mention the "Look Who's Talking" movie series, died unexpectedly at 71 on December 5 after a short, private cancer battle.

Bob McGrath, familiar to generations of kids as Bob Johnson on "Sesame Street," died at 90 on December 4.

French sex kitten of the '50s and '60s Mylène Demongeot — who racked up successful films from 1958's "Bonjour Tristesse" to this year's smash hit "Retirement Home" — died of primary peritoneal carcinoma on December 1 at 87.

Cliff Emmich, memorable in "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" and "Halloween II," died November 28 of lung cancer at 85.

A partner of Dog the Bounty Hunter, David Robinson, died suddenly on November 30. He was just 50.

Frank Vallelonga Jr., who appeared in his brother's Best Picture-winning film "Green Book," was found dead on November 29. He was 60.

"Orange Is the New Black" actor Brad William Henke died in his sleep November 28 at 56. No cause was immediately determined.

Legendary musician Christine McVie, known for many hits she wrote for and performed with Fleetwood Mac — including "You Make Loving Fun," "Don't Stop," "Hold Me," and "Little Lies" — died November 30 at 79 following a brief illness.

Donald Anthony St. Claire, who at 69 was the oldest competitor ever to appear on "The Amazing Race" (back in 2004), died in November at 87.

Irene Cara, who starred in "Sparkle" and "Fame" and won the Oscar for co-writing "Flashdance... What a Feeling" with Giorgio Moroder, died unexpectedly on November 25 at her Florida home. She was 63.

Robert Clary, Corporal LeBeau on "Hogan's Heroes" and a real-life Holocaust survivor, died at 96 on November 16.
