2024 Emmy Nominee for Outstanding Entertainment News Program

The death of TV legend Betty White was announced on New Year's Eve 2021, coming less than three weeks ahead of what would've been her 100th birthday.

"Comic Book Men" reality star Rob Bruce was found dead in his storage unit home in New Jersey on December 31. He was 62.

Jeanine Ann Roose, who played Young Violet in the classic "It's a Wonderful Life," died at 84 on New Year's Eve after battling an abdominal infection.

Football legend John Madden, the NFL Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster whose name later became synonymous with a top-selling video game, died at 85. The league said he died unexpectedly and did not detail a cause.

Legendary essayist, author, and screenwriter Joan Didion, whose "The Year of Magical Thinking" won the National Book Award, died at 87 in December.

Sally Ann Howes, fondly remembered for her performance in the 1968 musical-fantasy film "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," died at 91 on December 19.

Bridget Hanley of the TV series "Here Come the Brides" (1968-1970) died at 80 in December after battling Alzheimer's disease.

Mexican singing icon Vicente Fernández died at 81 in December several months after suffering a hard fall.

Best-selling "Interview with the Vampire" author Anne Rice died following a stroke at age 80 in December.

Cara Williams — seen in 1957 at right with Betty White — died at 96 of a heart attack in December. She had been an Oscar nominee for 1958's "The Defiant Ones" and an Emmy nominee for "Pete and Gladys" (1960-1962).

Mike Nesmith, the Monkees' visionary singer-songwriter and a trailblazer in the music-video medium, died of natural causes at 78 in December.

Yvonne Wilder, from the original, 1961 movie version of "West Side Story" died at 84 in late November.

Bob Dole, a longtime senator, Gerald Ford's running mate in 1976, and a three-time presidential candidate, died at 98 in December.

Shakespearean actor Antony Sher, seen at right in 2016 with his husband Gregory Doran, died at the beginning of December after a yearlong battle with terminal cancer.

Tony nominee Eddie Mekka, famous for his long run as Carmine Ragusa on "Laverne & Shirley," died at home at the end of November. He was 69.

Beauty expert and "Journey to the Center of the Earth" actress Arlene Dahl died at 96 in November. She was the mother of actor Lorenzo Lamas, and the grandmother of reality star Shayne Lamas.

Virgil Abloh, seen with Bella Hadid, died at 41 in November after a secret cancer battle. He had been the artistic director Louis Vuitton and a founder of the Off-White fashion house.

Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim died at 91 on November 26.

Peter Aykroyd, younger brother of Dan and a '79-'80 "SNL" performer and writer, died at 66 in November. His death was announced by "SNL," which tweeted the 1979 short "Java Junkie" starring Aykroyd.

Bill Hinsche — of the '60s teen group Dino, Desi & Billy — died at 70 in November after a short cancer battle. Tragically, he reportedly died the same day as his mother, Celia, who was 96.

"The Sandlot" actor Art LaFleur died of atypical Parkinson's disease at 78 in November.

Movie and TV veteran Dean Stockwell, famous for "Quantum Leap," for his years as a child actor, and for such films as "Paris, Texas," "Blue Velvet," and "Married to the Mob," died at 85 in November.

Longtime "The Young and the Restless" star Jerry Douglas died after a short illness at 88 in November, just a few days shy of his 89th birthday.

Captain Mark Howard, of "Below Deck Mediterranean," died unexpectedly at 65 in October.

Miss American 1942 Jo-Carroll Dennison, the first contestant to object to wearing a swimsuit while promoting the pageant, died at 97 on October 18.

JoAnna Cameron, the glamorous actress who played TV's first female superhero on the '70s kids' show "Isis," died following a stroke at age 70 in October.

James Michael Tyler, Gunther on "Friends," died at 59 in October following a three-year battle with prostate cancer.

Val Bisoglio, famous for a long-running role on "Quincy, M.E." and playing the dad of John Travolta's "Saturday Night Fever" character, died at 95 in October.

Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was serving as the director of photography on the film "Rust," was accidentally shot to death in October during filming.

Peter Scolari, seen on the right in a "Bosom Buddies" still with Tom Hanks, died at 66 of cancer in October. He was an Emmy winner for "Girls."

Betty Lynn of "The Andy Griffith Show" fame died at 95 in October.

Four-star Gen. Colin Powell, a political opinion-shaper and widely respected public figure, died at 84 on October 18 after battling COVID-19. He had also been diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

Ravil Isyanov of "NCIS: Los Angeles" died in September after a long illness. He was 59.

Comic Ricarlo Flanagan died at 40 in October after a battle with COVID-19.

"Mad About You" actress Cynthia Harris died at 87 in October.

Former Disney child star Tommy Kirk died in his Las Vegas home at 79 on September 28.

Willie Garson, who played Stanford Blatch on "Sex and the City," in the "SATC" films, and who will play him in the upcoming series sequel "And Just Like That...," died September 21 after a brief illness. He was 57.

Sarah Dash, a founding member of Labelle — whose "Lady Marmalade" set the stage for disco in 1974 — died unexpectedly at 76 on September 20.

Jimmy Garrett, who played the son of Lucille Ball's character on her '60s sitcom "The Lucy Show," died in a fall in September. He was 66.

"Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" star Jane Powell died at 92 on September 16.

Michael Constantine, an Emmy winner for "Room 222" and the actor who played the father in the "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" franchise, died at 94 on August 31.

Nino Castelnuovo, the Italian actor famed for his appearance in the French film "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg," died at 84 in September.

Comic actor Art Metrano, known for two "Police Academy" movies, died at 84 on September 8.

French New Wave cinema icon Jean-Paul Belmondo died at 88 at his Paris home on September 6.

Sarah Harding, 39, one of the members of the '00s English girl group Girls Aloud, died of breast cancer on September 5.

"Today's" iconic weatherman Willard Scott died at 87 in September.

Ed Asner, "Mary Tyler Moore" and "Lou Grant" Emmy winner, died in his sleep at 91 on August 29.

Michael Nader of "Dynasty" and "All My Children" — seen here with Joan Collins — died of untreatable cancer on August 23.

Marilyn Eastman, who helped get "Night of the Living Dead" made in 1968 — and memorably battled zombies in the horror classic — died in her sleep at 87 on August 22.

Rolling Stones member Charlie Watts, considered one of the finest drummers of his generation, died at 80 on August 24 of undisclosed causes.

Micki Grant, a trailblazer on soaps and as the creator and star of the long-running Broadway musical "Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope," died at 92 in August.

UB40 co-founder Brian Travers lost a battle with cancer at 62 in August.

Don Everly (left), the last of the Everly Brothers duo, died on August 21 at 84.

Former child superstar of the '30s Jane Withers died at 95 on August 7.

"Night Court" star Markie Post died at 70 of cancer on August 7.

Dennis "Dee Tee" Thomas, a founding member of Kool & the Gang, died in his sleep at 70 on August 7.

Gina Krasley of "My 600-lb. Life" died on August 1 of undisclosed causes.

TikTok star Anthony Barajas, 19, and his 18-year-old date were shot to death during a screening of "The Forever Purge" in July. Authorities believe the violence was random.

"Port Charles" actor Jay Pickett died unexpectedly at 60 while shooting a movie in Idaho on July 30.

Legendary stand-up comic Jackie Mason died at 93 on July 24 in a Manhattan hospital of undisclosed causes.

Biz Markie, the so-called "Clown Prince of Hip-Hop," died at 57 on July 16. Though no cause was given, the "Just a Friend" rapper had battled Type 2 diabetes.

Charlie Robinson, who played Mac on "Night Court," died at 75 on July 12.

William Smith, long a muscular and often menacing figure on TV and in films, died at 88 in July. He is remembered for the series "Laredo," the miniseries "Rich Man, Poor Man," and for his on-screen fights in such films as "Darker Than Amber" and "Any Which Way You Can."

Richard Donner, iconic director of such work as the "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" episode of TV's "The Twilight Zone" (1963), "The Omen" (1976), "Superman" (1978), "The Goonies" (1985), and the "Lethal Weapon" film series (1987-1998), died at 91 of undisclosed causes on July 5.

"General Hospital" star Stuart Damon, also remembered as the Prince on a massively popular 1965 TV production of "Cinderella," died at 84 in June after suffering renal failure.

John Paragon, most famous as Jambi the Genie on "Pee-wee's Playhouse," died in April of undisclosed causes. His death was made public in June.

Frank Bonner, who played loud-mouthed and loud-jacketed Herb Tarlek on "WKRP in Cincinnati," died at 79 on June 16.

"The Mod Squad" and "Purple Rain" star Clarence Williams III succumbed to colon cancer at 81 in June.

Prolific TV and stage actor Robert Hogan died at 87 of pneumonia in June after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Comedic stage, TV, and movie actress Arlene Golonka, known for "Mayberry R.F.D.," died at 85 on May 31.

Controversial diet guru and religious leader Gwen Shamblin, 66, and her husband Joe Lara, 59, a former TV "Tarzan," died along with five others in a plane crash in Tennessee in May.

Popular singer B.J. Thomas, famous for such songs as "Hooked on a Feeling," "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song," died of lung cancer in May at 78, just two months after announcing his terminal diagnosis.

Beloved TV actor Gavin MacLeod, famous for his work on "McHale's Navy," "Mary Tyler Moore," and "The Love Boat," died at 90 in May at his home in Palm Desert, California.

Samuel E. Wright, who sang the Oscar-winning song "Under the Sea" in "The Little Mermaid," died in May at 72 or 74; sources vary on his age.

Kevin Clark, whose only movie was the beloved "School of Rock," died in a bicycle accident in May. He was 32.

Legendary comic writer and performer Paul Mooney died of a heart attack at 79 on May 19.

Widely admired movie, Broadway, and TV actor Charles Grodin, who hosted a talk show in the '90s and wrote several best-selling books, died at 86 in May following a battle with bone marrow cancer.

Damon Weaver, who famously interviewed President Obama at age 11, died in May at just 23.
