2024 Emmy Nominee for Outstanding Entertainment News Program

Popular actor Val Kilmer took over for Michael Keaton in "Batman Forever" (1995), directed by Joel Schumacher. The film was a hit, but Kilmer opted out of the next film, "Batman and Robin," believing there was too much emphasis placed on the villains.

Veteran actor Robert Lowery assumed the Batman role for the 1949 serial "Batman and Robin." In 1956, Lowery appeared on an episode of "Adventures of Superman" opposite George Reeves, marking the first time a Batman actor and a Superman actor had shared screen time. Reeves later committed suicide and was portrayed in the 2006 film "Hollywoodland" by... Ben Affleck. Lowery passed away in 1971.

This Canadian actor voiced Batman on "The Batman" (2004-2008), an animated series that was part of Saturday morning TV on Kids' WB.

The star of the "RoboCop" movies (1987 & 1990), Weller voiced an older Batman in the direct-to-video animated two-parter "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" (2012-2013).

Veteran character actor Olan Soule was the go-to voice actor for Batman, along with Adam West, from 1968 to 1984, including "The Batman/Superman Hour" (1968-1969), "Super Friends" (1973), "The All-New Super Friends Hour" (1977), as well as on Batman's appearances on cartoons like "The New Scooby-Doo Movies" (1972). Soule died in 1994.

Keaton, now an Oscar-nominated actor, played the iconic role in "Batman" (1989) and "Batman Returns" (1992) under director Tim Burton. He left the role when Burton left the films.

The first actor to portray Batman was 23-year-old Lewis G. Wilson, who played the part in a 15-episode big-screen serial called "The Batman" (1943). His enemy was a Japanese mastermind (played by white actor J. Carrol Naish), in keeping with the demands of WWII. Wilson's son has executive produced the James Bond films since "Moonraker" (1979). Lewis Wilson died in 2000.

Conroy is a fan-fave when it comes to voicing Batman, which he did in 1992's "Batman: The Animated Series." He has also been the voice of the superhero in animated films and video games.

Now an Oscar winner and one of the biggest stars in the world, George Clooney was still looking for a signature role when he signed on as Batman in "Batman and Robin" (1997). The film, featuring Chris O'Donnell as the Boy Wonder, did so-so at the b.o. but was a critical bomb. Fans and critics alike were distracted by the nipples on Batman's suit, and by the film's campy tone. The movie wound up being the last in the line of that iteration of Batman flicks.

Christian Bale took over the role for "Batman Begins" (2005) under the direction of Christopher Nolan. The stylish result represented a reboot of the Batman film series. For three films, including the highly acclaimed "The Dark Knight" (2008) and "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012), Bale wore the cape and won over fans.

Bruce Thomas first played Batman in a series of OnStar TV commercials from 2000-2002, and also played the part on The WB's "Birds of Prey" (2002).

The distinguished actor Bruce Greenwood provided the voice of Batman in the animated direct-to-video film "Batman: Under the Red Hood" (2010) and for the animated Cartoon Network series "Young Justice" (2010-present).

Baldwin, of the acting dynasty, had been a close runner-up behind Val Kilmer to play Batman back in the day. Instead, he voiced the part in 2010's "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths," a direct-to-video animated movie.

Versatile actor Ben McKenzie was the voice of Batman in "Batman: Year One," a 2011 animated film based on an arc printed by DC Comics in 1987.

Current Batman Ben Affleck has played the part in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016), "Suicide Squad" (2016) and "Justice League" (2017). He is expected to reprise the role in "The Batman" and "Justice League: Part Two." For many fans, he is not only the latest, but also the greatest Batman.
