Amir El-Masry & Ben Sharrock Talk Bringing a Heartfelt Refugee Story to Screen with ‘Limbo’

“Limbo” takes a fresh look at the refugee experience with loads of heart and real human emotion.

“Extra” correspondent Adam Weissler caught up with star Amir El-Masry and writer-director Ben Sharrock to learn more.

The movie takes place on a fictional Scottish island where a young Syrian musician, played by Amir, is awaiting the results of his asylum claim. The drama goes along with a great soundtrack, making for a very musical film.

Sharrock actually spent time working for an NGO in refugee camps in southern Algeria and living in Damascus before the outbreak of the Syrian civil war. This experience inspired the film.

“Limbo” opens in theaters today.
