COVID-19 Survivor Gregg Garfield on His Battle with the Virus: ‘My Immune System Almost Killed Me’

“Extra’s” Billy Bush spoke with Gregg Garfield, who was one of the earliest patients to be diagnosed with COVID-19 in the United States.

Garfield beat the odds, including a prediction that he had a 1% chance of survival, and a month-long coma. Of his ordeal with the coronavirus, the 54-year-old said, with his girlfriend AJ by his side, “My immune system fought against me and almost killed me, shut down all of my vital organs.”

During their chat, Billy learned that Gregg lost his fingers while battling the virus.

The couple has been offering support to Nick Cordero’s wife Amanda Kloots as he continues to fight for his life after testing positive for COVID-19 in March. AJ shared, “I text back and forth with her almost every day.”
