The Internet has not been kind to that Peloton commercial — you know the one, the one showing a young wife and mother receiving the high-end exercise bike as a Christmas gift and peddling her way through the following year.
Now, Ryan Reynolds is capitalizing on the publicity surrounding the ad, simultaneously helping its star, Monica Ruiz, transition out of the controversy.
In a video posted to his Twitter account, Reynolds promotes his Aviation Gin with a spot starring Ruiz as a woman toasting "to new beginnings" in a state of shock, seemingly a parody continuation of the Peloton spot.
As she guzzles two glasses of gin, one of the character's supportive friends gushes, "You look great, by the way!" The Peloton ad had been criticized for presenting a scenario in which an already fit young woman is excited to get an exercise bike from her husband.
Underscoring what he was up to, Reynolds wrote on his post, "Exercise bike not included."
In a statement to CNN, Peloton said of its original ad, "We constantly hear from our members how their lives have been meaningfully and positively impacted after purchasing or being gifted a Peloton Bike or Tread, often in ways that surprise them. Our holiday spot was created to that fitness and wellness journey."
