Rosie O'Donnell debuted a shorter new 'do Monday in NYC as she celebrated the ongoing success of her Rosie’s Theater Kids.

"Extra" caught up with Rosie, who is thrilled to have helped children for years with her performing arts programs, saying, "It's the joy of being involved in musical theater and what it can do for your life and soul. We have had tremendous success with all the kids going off to college."

Her public appearance came just weeks after reports she and her fiancée, Elizabeth Rooney, have split up. She told us, "I'm good. We are still figuring things out — it's hard in the public light… It's hard for a person who is a normal person in a normal job. I’m kind of used to it... We are trying to figure it out… I am a hopeful person and I am hoping for the best."

Her date for the celebration? "My children," she said. "They are supposed to be here and we are supposed to be taking photos with the family — my children and their respective dates. It's a big night. They each brought their respective boyfriend or girlfriend."

Her daughter Chelsea recently welcomed a baby girl. While Rosie and Chelsea have had their ups and downs, O'Donnell said she was there for the birth! "I got there just in time," she said. "She had just pushed the baby out and I got to hold her when she was just spanking new… Chelsea has grown a lot — having a baby and being in a committed relationship. Now, we all root for each other."

"I told her, whether she believes it or not, I am her mother and it's the mother's job to guide you into adulthood," she went on to say. "She is really maturing and I am really proud of her and looking forward to seeing them for the holidays."
