Gladys Bourdain, the mother of late chef Anthony Bourdain, has expressed total shock over his suicide last week at age 61.
Bourdain, a longtime staff editor at The New York Times, told the paper, "He is absolutely the last person in the world I would have ever dreamed would do something like this."
She went on to say her son "had everything. Success beyond his wildest dreams. Money beyond his wildest dreams." She did, however, allow that Bourdain had been "in a dark mood those couple of days" without elaborating.
Bourdain committed suicide by hanging June 8 in his hotel room in Strasbourg, France, where he was shooting an episode of his Peabody Award-winning CNN series "Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown."
