“Booze Traveler” host Jack Maxwell is facing one of the toughest battles — cancer.
Maxwell is battling non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer that starts in the white blood cells. Last year, he was diagnosed after undergoing several scans. He told Us Weekly, “They said, ‘Yeah, it looks like you have cancer,’ and I said, ‘I don’t have cancer. Cancer? How can I?’ I was not symptomatic. I was tired. I thought that was from traveling.”
“When they found it, I was pretty far along [but] still not in the danger zone,” Maxwell added. “Right now I’m in the middle of chemo and even that has affected me less than I thought it would.”
Despite the diagnosis, Maxwell is still maintaining a positive attitude. He explained, “I said, ‘Listen, cancer is a terrorist, that’s all. Yes, it kills and it does devastation, but mostly it messes with you.’ I didn’t think, ‘This is it,’ or feel bad for myself. I wasn’t going to let that happen to me. It’s not just a psychological ploy. I really just was trying to stay positive through the whole thing.”
As for why he waited to reveal his diagnosis, Maxwell said, “I just think it’s a good time to share it and to not keep it a secret. “Now it’s going to be gone soon — fingers crossed, knock on wood — so I just think this is the right time.”
Jack, who is undergoing chemotherapy, isn’t allowing his battle to affect his life. He said, “I’ll handle it, I’ll beat it and I’ll move on… This just feels more like a speed bump than any kind of brick wall.”
“I’m out there, I’m doing hikes, I’m trying to do as much as I can,” he emphasized. “I’ll walk around the block with weights. I’ll get some sun… I don’t let it get me down.”
