Rickey E. Smith, a former “American Idol” contestant, has died. He was 36.
The singer was involved in a head-on collision on I-240 in Oklahoma at 3 a.m. Friday, reports the Associated Press.
Gerardo Cerda Jr., 27, was allegedly driving a pickup truck westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-240 when he slammed into Smith head-on.
Smith died at the scene, while Cerda was taken to the hospital and later arrested for DUI.
Smith finished eighth place on Season 2 of “American Idol.”
Fellow contestant Clay Aiken remembered Smith on Twitter, writing, "Suffice it to say my heart is truly breaking today. Heaven's choir has a new beautiful voice. I love you and will miss you, Rickey.”
