“Extra” live blogged the “Game of Thrones” Season 5 premiere!
Here we go! It’s time to return to Westeros to find out what Daenerys, Jon Snow, Tyrion, Cersei, Jamie, Arya, Sansa and the rest of the gang are up to. Keep reading for a full recap, and be sure to refresh for the latest updates.
9:55 PM: Whoa! First major death of the season. Mance Rayder, the King Beyond the Wall, was burned at the stake by King Stannis Baratheon. Jon Snow spared him some of the pain, by shooting him with an arrow.
9:49 PM: Mance is taken to see Stannis, as a crowd from the Night's Watch and the free folk look on. Stannis says if he bends the knee that he will grant him mercy. Mance wishes him well, and the guards grab him and tie him to a stake. Melissandre addresses the crowd, saying "We choose light or we choose darkness." She then lights Mance on fire. As the King Beyond the Wall burns, Jon can't take it and leaves. He grabs a bow and shoots Mance, sparing him the pain of burning to death.
9:45 PM: Jon Snow is visiting Mance Rayder. Mance says he knows about Stannis' plan, but he won't go along with it. Jon reminds him that he united all the men north of the wall to save them, and this plan could do just that. Mance says he won't have them bending the knee to a southern king. Mance then asks how they will kill him, beheading hanging? Jon says they will burn him alive. Mance says that is better than betraying everything he believes. Jon says he's making a mistake, and Mance answers, "The freedom to make my own mistakes was all I ever wanted."
9:43 PM: She goes to visit the dragons and they come lunging at her, breathing fire. She seems heartbroken and terrified as she runs out of the room.
9:42 PM: Daenerys is in bed with Daario and he tries to convince her to open fighting pits, telling her he fought in the pits when he was younger. He also reminds her that she's not the mother of Meereen, she's the mother of dragons. She reveals she hasn't seen Drogon in weeks, while the other two are still tied up under ground.
9:39 PM: Daenerys is told that the masters would like her to reopen the fighting pits, this time instead of slaves they will be free men fighting.
9:36 PM: Now, Varys is telling Tyrion that he believes the Lannister will be a key player in bringing peace and prosperity to the Seven Kingdoms. Varys explains that Tommen and Stannis don't have what it takes, revealing that he wants Tyrion to help Daenerys Targaryen take the Iron Throne. Tyrion's response, "Can I drink myself to death on the way to Meereen?"
9:33 PM: Loras Tyrell is in the middle of a tryst with a guy named Oliver, when his sister Margaery walks in, accusing her brother of keeping the king waiting. Loras says he doesn't think he will have to marry Cersei after all, which is bad for Margaery because that means Cersei will stay in Kings Landing. It seems Margaery has something up her sleeve, as she shrugs it off saying "perhaps."
9:30 PM: At Twyin's wake we get our first look at the Sparrows. Cersei's cousin Lancel Lannister approaches her barefoot and in what looks like burlap, with his dad explaining he's now with a religious group that refers to themselves as sparrows. Lancel approaches her later and tells her he's sorry about their affair and also about giving King Robert the wine at the boar hunt.
9:29 PM: Sansa and Lord Baelish are supposedly headed to the Fingers where he grew up, but it seems Littlefinger told everyone that as a ruse. He really plans to take Sansa somewhere safe, where even Cersei can't find her.
9:27 PM: Brienne and Pod are still on the move. Brienne seems completely fed up with Pod and life, telling him she's not a knight so he's not a squire. She says all the good lords are dead, the rest are monsters. Then... Sansa rides by with Littlefinger. Too bad they are hidden in a carriage, so Brienne has no clue.
9:26 PM: Up in The Eyrie, Lord Robin is practicing his sword fighting... and it isn't going well. Littlefinger and Sansa watch.
9:24 PM: Stannis wants to know if Snow wants to avenge his brother Robb, who was killed by the Boltons. Stannis says he plans to go after Roose Bolton and he wants the Wildlings to help him! He wants to take Winterfell, then pardon the Wildlings and give them their lives and their freedom as citizens of the realm. To get the ball rolling, Jon in supposed to convince their leader, Mance Rayder, to bend the knee.
9:23 PM: Melissandre appears. It seems King Stannis wants a word with Jon Snow. He rides up the elevator with the red witch and she asks if he is a virgin. When he says no, she replies, good. What does it mean?
9:21 PM: Now we are at The Wall, and it is looking grey as usual. Jon Snow is training in the yard with a young boy (maybe the one who killed Ygritte). Sam is there too with Gilly. They are concerned they will be sent away.
9:19 PM: Cut to Daenerys who is speaking with her team about what happened to the soldier. It turns out the masked man was part of the Sons of the Harpy.
9:16 PM: It looks like we are now in Meereen. We see one of the Unsullied cuddling with a prostitute. Topless, she hums a tune while caressing him... then someone slits his throat! A man stands next to her in a scary gold mask!
9:15 PM: Varys tries to convince Tyrion not to drink, telling him it is time to think about the future of their country. Tyrion responds, "The future is s**t just, like the past." Then he throws up.
9:13 PM: Tyrion looks worse for wear as Varys let's him out of a crate after some great journey. They appear to be in some beautiful, exotic location, which turns out to be Pentos.
9:10 PM: Flash forward to Cersei visiting her father Tywin's dead body. Jamie is there too. Jamie says everyone is out to get the family, but Cersei is only focused on getting Tyrion. She wants to know of Jamie set Tyrion free. She believes Jamie killed their father indirectly. She lays on the guilt saying, "He loved you more than anyone in this world."
9:05 PM: The first scene features two little girls, one blonde, one brunette, in the woods. They come upon a shack. A woman is inside... a witch who can see the future! The blonde girl demands that the witch tell her her future. The witch takes a blood sample then says she can ask three questions. When the blonde asks if she will marry the prince, the witch says she will marry the king. He will have many children, and she will have three. The witch says the girl will be queen for a time, until a younger one comes along. It turns out the blonde is Cersei in a flashback!
9 PM: It's starting! The new Season 5 intro includes Kind's Landing, The Eyrie, Winterfell, The Wall, Pentos and Meereen. Where was Dorne? Did we miss it?
