Biggest Celebrity Breakups in 2011
Melissa Gilbert and Bruce Boxleitner
Former child star Melissa Gilbert filed for divorce from Bruce Boxleitner, her husband of 16 years. "We have loved each other for a very long time and we share four incredible sons together," Gilbert said in a statement. The couple has 15-year old son, Michael Garrett Boxleitner, named after Melissa's former TV dad, Michael Landon.
Surata Zuri McCants and Ruben Studdard
"American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard filed for divorce from Surata Zuri McCants, his wife of more than three years. The soulful singer filed the papers in his native Alabama, citing "irreconcilable differences."
Pippa Middleton and Alex Loudon
Perhaps Pippa Middleton's rear end getting its own Facebook page was too much for boyfriend Alex Loudon to handle. The UK's most desirable little sister is back on the market after splitting with Loudon, a former professional cricket player-turned-businessman. Duchess Catherine's younger sister, who became the planet's best-known bridesmaid in April, split with Loudon after a series of heated arguments which reportedly dealt with Loudon's inability to accept Middleton's new sex-symbol status.
Vienna Girardi and Kasey Kahl
"The Bachelor" and "Bachelorette" alums Vienna Girardi and Kasey Kahl, who teamed up on spin-off show "Bachelor Pad," ended their relationship. "Yes Vienna and I have split. It's been 5 weeks now.I will always love, be there for her, and wish her the best," Kahl tweeted. "@KaseyRKahl will always be my best friend, but we have split. No idea what the future holds for us but we will always remain friends," Girardi said.
Zoe Saldana and Keith Britton
"Columbiana" star Zoe Saldana and Keith Britton, her entrepreneur fiance, have called it quits. The pair "amicably separated after 11 years," her rep said in a statement. Saldana, 33, and Britton, 35, announced their engagement in June 2010.
Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko
Maybe their massive height difference proved to be too much for petite star Hayden Panettiere and her prizefighter boyfriend of two years, Wladimir Klitschko. The 35-year-old boxer told People in May: "We had a great time together, but it's not easy to manage a relationship between two continents." Hayden Panettiere also confirmed the breakup, adding: "Even though we've decided splitting up is best, we have an amazing amount of love and respect for each other and remain very close friends."
Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper
After two blissful years together, Renee Zellweger and 2011's Sexiest Man Alive, Bradley Cooper, ended their relationship. The movie stars met in 2009 and moved in together last fall before breaking up in March. No reason was given for the split.
Shakira and Gerard Pique
International superstar Shakira dumped her footballer boyfriend, FC Barcelona star Gerard Pique, after hewas reportedly unfaithful. During Shakira's absences from Spain, Pique reportedly cheated on her with a younger woman. After the Colombian beauty discovered his infidelity, she broke it off with him. She and Gerard Pique were dating for six months.
Kate Bosworth and Alexander Skarsgard
Alexander Skarsgard and Kate Bosworth are no more. In fact, the couple managed to quietly break up "a while" before the media caught wind of their separation. "It was very mutual," a source told Us Weekly. Skarsgard is "single" and "loving the attention" from the opposite sex, an insider added.
Lady Gaga and Luc Carl
"Bad Romance" singer Lady Gaga separated from her bartender/drummer boyfriend Luc Carl. Gaga confirmed the breakup, revealing on "The Graham Norton Show" in May, "I don't have a boyfriend and haven't been on any dates recently." The singer told Rolling Stone last year, "I've really never loved anyone like I loved him. Or like I love him. That relationship really shaped me." The couple broke up several years ago before rekindling their romance in July 2010... but it's over for good.
Siobhan Bonnouvrier and Kiefer Sutherland
It's over for "24" star Kiefer Sutherland and his lady of three years, Siobhan Bonnouvrier. The couple broke up earlier this year. Back in 1990, Sutherland was engaged Julia Roberts before the actress called off the wedding.
Elisabetta Canalis and George Clooney
After two years of dating, the actor and Italian model Elisabetta Canalis announced their split in June. "We are not together anymore. It's very difficult and very personal, and we hope everyone can respect our privacy," Clooney and Canalis said in a joint statement. Clooney has since moved on with former wrestler and actress Stacy Keibler.
Cameron Diaz and Alex Rodriguez
Although it looked like things were just getting started between "Bad Teacher" star Cameron Diaz and baseball hunk Alex Rodriguez, the hot couple parted ways in September after dating for a year and a half. Their romance was marked by beach getaways, working out and Cameron playing with the Yankee slugger's two children. They decided to end their romance due to conflicting schedules. They amicably parted ways.
Scarlett Johansson and Sean Penn
Immediately following her divorce from Ryan Reynolds, Scarlett Johansson and Sean Penn had a whirlwind romance for a few months, before calling it quits in June. Penn, 24 years her senior, whisked ScarJo away on a Mexican getaway after they were spotted getting flirty in L.A. The pair walked hand-in-hand at the White House Correspondents' Dinner party in Washington D.C. and was also seen jogging near Sean's home in Malibu. Late-night talk show host Chelsea Handler and hotelier Andre Balazs have called it quits after less than a year of dating. Handler, whose exes include 50 Cent, Animal Planet's Dave Salmoni and Comcast CEO Ted Harbert, explained, "It's not about me, 'cause I would like to make fun of him as much as possible, but he has kids, so I have to be nice." Balazs was once engaged to Uma Thurman. The couple first went public in May.

Following two years of marriage, adorable "New Girl" actress Zooey Deschanel separated from Death Cab for Cutie lead singer Ben Gibbard. "It was mutual and amicable," a source said. "There was no third party involved." Deschanel and Gibbard tied the knot outside Seattle in late September 2009. They were introduced by their music manager at the time.
Ashley Greene and Joe Jonas
In March, Joe Jonas and girlfriend Ashley Greene went their separate ways after dating for nearly a year. Conflicting and busy schedules were most likely to blame for the split, with Greene in Vancouver filming "Breaking Dawn," and Jonas in NYC recording a new album.
Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton
"X Factor" judge Nicole Scherzinger is single after ending her on-off, four-year relationship with race car driver Lewis Hamilton. Kat Von D and Jesse James
Tattooed couple Kat Von D and Jesse James called off their engagement for the second time this year. Von D, 29, famously got Jesse's childhood face tattooed to her body, and surprised him with it on her TLC show shortly before the breakup. Kat split from Jesse, 42, after he reportedly cheated on her 19 times. Von D, who said she wanted to prove the world wrong about James, recently admitted she deserves "a big fat 'I told you so,' from everyone." James, who was previously married to Sandra Bullock, admitted during an interview with Piers Morgan that he'd had extramarital affairs during his marriage to Bullock. "I think there was some suspicions, you know, which were right on her [Sandra's] part. But... it [the cheating] came out of left field. You know, she wasn't ready for it."
Michaele Salahi and Tareq Salahi
Infamous White House party crashers Michaele Salahi and Tareq Salahi have gone their separate ways. Michaele, who appeared on the now-canceled "The Real Housewives of D.C.," became a number one groupie after she ran away with Journey guitarist Neal Schon. Michaele left home without telling her husband — who believed his wife was kidnapped and phoned police. Michaele explained the scandalous exit from her five-year marriage to Tareq, saying in the late '90's she dated both men, but chose Tareq because she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and believed she would be better taken care of by Salahi. Michaele married Tareq in 2003.
Pia Toscano and Mark Ballas
The reality show romance between Pia Toscano and Mark Ballas has come to an end. The "Dancing with the Stars" pro and the "American Idol" finalist started dating shortly after Pia was shockingly eliminated from season 10. They called it quits after they "decided with everything going on that they couldn't give each other what would be fair," said a source. Ballas was paired with Kristin Cavallari on season 13's "Dancing with the Stars."
Minka Kelly and Derek Jeter
"Charlie's Angel" beauty Minka Kelly and Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter spent three years together before announcing their split in August. "They care about each other and it was amicable. They're still friends," an insider told People. Kelly had been a constant presence in Jeter's family's box at Yankee Stadium during the summer, as the couple dodged engagement rumors for the past year. There's no doubt that Jeter will have trouble moving on. The Yankee hunk has been linked Mariah Carey, Jordana Brewster, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel and Gabrielle Union.
Geri Halliwell and Henry Beckwith
Former Spice Girls member Geri Halliwell was reportedly "heartbroken" after ending her two-year relationship with boyfriend Henry Beckwith. The couple's demise came from a "major" fight back in August, which caused Beckwith to move back to South West London.
Ahna O'Reilly and James Franco
"127 Hours" star James Franco and Ahna O'Reilly parted ways after dating for five years. Franco admitted "it's over" in the August issue of Playboy. "We'd been living together in L.A. and then came to New York to go school for two years. Then I signed up for more school. I think that was it for her," he said. Before Franco and O'Reilly began dating in 2006, the "Planet of the Apes" actor romanced actress Marla Sokoloff, and has also been linked to Sienna Miller.
Emily Maynard and Brad Womack
After a lot of crying, drama and heartbreak, Emily Maynard and Brad Womack — thrust together by reality show "The Bachelor," are most definitely over. In June, Maynard confirmed to People that the two were "no longer engaged." Maynard explained the reason for the split, saying she wanted her life with six-year-old daughter, Ricki to "get back to normal."
Crystal Harris and Hugh Hefner
Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and Crystal Harris split five days before they were set to say "I do." Hefner confirmed the breakup in June via Twitter, saying that his 25-year old fiancee walked out on him, days before the wedding. Harris said, "After much deep reflection and thought, I have decided to end my engagement with Hef. I have the utmost respect for Hef and wish him the best going forward." Following the split, Harris bad-mouthed Hef to Howard Stern, saying he lasted "like two seconds" in the bedroom, and adding, "I just, like, walked away. I'm turned off by Hef." Harris later apologized to Hugh for the inappropriate comments.
Rosie O'Donnell and Tracy Kachtick-Anders
Talk show host Rosie O'Donnell ended her relationship with Tracy Kachtick-Anders after one year. The two were first seen holding hands in Miami in December of 2009. Combined, they had 10 kids, prompting Rosie to refer to their brood as the "Gay-dy Bunch." Since the breakup, Rosie has moved on with Michelle Rounds, a woman she met outside a Starbucks. O'Donnell said she was not aware Rounds was gay. "I thought she was a 28-year-old heterosexual girl, because that's what she looked like to me. And she's a 40-year-old gay woman," Rosie told "Nightline" in an interview back in October.
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony
Perhaps one of the most surprising breakups was that of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, who announced their plans to divorce in July, after seven years of marriage. In a joint statement, the couple said, "This has been a very difficult decision. We have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters. It is a painful time for all involved and we appreciate the respect of our privacy at this time." No reason was cited for the split, although there were rumors of J.Lo being fed up with Marc's alleged infidelity and controlling ways. Lopez, 41, and Anthony, 42, wed in June 2004 in an intimate, secret ceremony at Lopez's Beverly Hills home, and renewed their vows last year. They have two children, 3-year-old twins Max and Emme. This was Marc's second divorce and J.Lo's third. She was previously married to Ojani Noa and Cris Judd.
Heather Locklear and Jack Wagner
The wedding is off for Heather Locklear and Jack Wagner. Just three months after the couple announced their engagement, they decided to call off those plans, with no explanation given. Her rep confirmed the separation, saying, "Jack and Heather are no longer engaged." The "Melrose Place" stars began dating in 2007 after she divorced Richie Sambora, and were last seen together in September celebrating Heather's 50th birthday in Hawaii.
Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger
One of the most dramatic and shocking splits in 2011 came from the Schwarzenegger household. The former Governor admitted to having an extramarital affair with the family's longtime housekeeper, Patty Baena, which yielded a love child. The boy is the same age as Schwarzenegger's youngest son, Christopher. After 25 years of marriage, an unhappy Maria decided to file for divorce. She had contemplated leaving Arnold for two years prior to finding out about his illegitimate son. Among many of the strange twists and turns in the scandalous affair, the maid, who worked with the family for over 20 years, was reportedly obsessed with Shriver and would put on her clothes and jewelry, unbeknownst to Maria.
Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher
Did Ashton's cheating plague his six-year marriage to Demi Moore? The "Two and a Half Men" star reportedly had a tryst with 22-year-old blonde, Sara Leal, who sold her story to a tabloid. Rumors of a breakup swirled for months, amid mysterious Twitter messages from both Demi and Ashton. Moore pulled the trigger in November, announcing her split from Kutcher.
Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries
After Kim Kardashian married Kris Humphries in a lavish Montecito ceremony in August that aired in a two-part special on E!, the reality vixen filed for divorce 72 days later, citing "irreconcilable differences." The pair dated for about a year before saying "I do." Tabloid reports claim Humphries was mean to Kim, calling her "fat" and "stupid."
