Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monáe, Octavia Spencer Break Barriers in ‘Hidden Figures'

Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monáe and Golden Globe nominee Octavia Spencer are breaking down racial and gender barriers in their new movie “Hidden Figures.”

The actresses portray the real lives of three mathematicians who worked for NASA, and they chatted with “Extra” Special Correspondent Angie Martinez about playing such heroic women.

When speaking about the stereotypes the mathematicians endured, Janelle shared, “These women did not allow that to get in their heads mentally, it didn't stop them from pursuing their dreams.” Octavia added, “It's all about empowerment."

Taraji met with the real Katherine Johnson many times prior to portraying her, and said, “There was a responsibility that came with it. These are these women's legacy, and you have to get it right.”

“Hidden Figures” flies into theaters Christmas Day.
