At the Toronto International Film Festival, Margot Robbie promoted her starring role in the buzzed-about film "I, Tonya," which was produced by her new husband, Tom Ackerley.
In the movie, Robbie plays infamous figure skater Tonya Harding, who pleaded guilty to hindering an investigation after her associates attacked her skating rival Nancy Kerrigan in 1994. The case that led to Harding's expulsion from the U.S. Figure Skating Association.
The 27-year-old hit the red carpet with her husband in Toronto, where she told "Extra's" Jerry Panacoli she took her role as Tonya very seriously, saying, “There’s a really specific tone in our film. There’s a lot of comedy, there’s a lot tragedy, the characters are very human.” She admitted she did not even know about the incident between Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding, revealing, “I was young when it happened — I missed it. It was a global phenomenon. I [was 4], so I missed it.”
When Jerry asked about being married for nine months, Robbie smiled and said, “Yeah, God, has it been nine months? It's gone so fast!”
Margot and Tom worked on the film right after exchanging vows in a low-key ceremony in Australia. She shared, “We did this film instead of our honeymoon. There were times we were sitting in a car parked in Atlanta freezing cold being like, 'We should be on a beach right now. We should be on a honeymoon. What are we doing?!' Following our dream.”
They did, however, have their dream honeymoon. Robbie said, “We did it after we finished shooting. It was great.”
Margot and Tom are also planning on working together more. She commented, “Yeah, it’s not just my husband and I — we have 30 films in development and a TV department. The company is growing quickly.”
Don’t expect their family to grow as quickly! She remarked, “There’s no time for that. We have a puppy.”
