Check out a funny parody video spoofing Sports Illustrated's wildly successful premium marketing campaign for "funky" football-shaped phones, which aired in the late 1980s.
The Soccer Ball Phone
Introducing the Soccer Ball Phone! We teamed up with some of our favorite comedians to parody those iconic magazine commercials that were all over TV in the early ‘90s. Go to https://fifa.wtf/soccerballphone for a special subscription offer now!Posted by Howler Magazine on Tuesday, June 13, 2017
In the funny video, Howler Media, a multimedia platform platform that covers global soccer from an American perspective, offers to give the soccer-ball-shaped phone for free with a one-year subscription.
The fake commercial, featuring Will Arnett, Jack Black, Paul Downs, Adam Pally, Sarah Silverman and Guillermo from "Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” was released just before Father’s Day. Sarah said at the beginning of the clip, "Father’s Day is right around the corner and once again I’m stumped. You know, he’s impossible to buy for. I’m out of ideas.” All the stars in the parody are represented by Kovert Creative.
Around the time the original commercials aired, Sports Illustrated gained 1.6 million new subscribers.
