Marcus Kowal and Mishel Eder said their final good-byes to 15-month-old son Liam on Tuesday night as he was removed from life support.
The boy’s 15-year-old aunt was pushing him in his stroller through a crosswalk in Hawthorne, California, on Saturday, when they were struck by an SUV. Donna Higgins, 72, was later arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and felony drunk driving.
She reportedly tried to flee the scene, but witnesses stopped her by blocking her car.
The Swedish MMA fighter shared a photo on Instagram of him holding his young son’s hand for the last time with the message, “Good night bebisen (baby), you'll always be with us. Pappa älskar dig (Daddy loves you).”
Eder also shared a photo of her holding Liam’s hand. She wrote, “Saying good bye to my light, my love before he goes to save lives. This pain is unbearable. Liam, I love you. Hug your children, kiss them always. Don't lose patience. Laugh with them often. Get off your phones and play games. #rememberliam.”
Kowal posted a series of messages on social media following the accident. After revealing that Liam had been declared brain-dead, he announced that they had decided to donate the little boy’s organs and were looking for recipients.
The athlete later shared a video on Instagram urging people not to drink and drive.
