Cannes Jewel Thieves Steal More Than $1M in Chopard Sparklers
In a real-life “Bling Ring” operation, Chopard jewels worth more than $1 million were stolen at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the jewelry was stolen from an employee of Chopard, who had stored the jewels in a safe in the Suite Novotel Cannes Centre to be loaned to stars walking the red carpet.
Cannes police told THR that the suspect gained access to the hotel room through an adjoining room with a connecting door and took the whole safe out of the wall. Authorities believe it may be an inside job and are questioning hotel employees.
In an ironic twist, Sofia Coppola's new movie "The Bling Ring", about a gang of celebrity-obsessed teens who break into stars' homes to steal their possessions, premiered at Cannes on Thursday evening.
