Spears Family Blasts 'Self-Serving' Dr. Phil
Britney Spears' family is angrily blasting Dr. Phil McGraw for publicly touting his visit with the troubled star while she was undergoing evaluation in the hospital.
"He was not invited to make this a public display or part of the media," said Lou Taylor, a spokesperson for mom Lynne, on NBC's "Today" show this morning. Taylor said that Brit's relationship with her mom and sister is now "compromised."
She also denied McGraw's claim that Jamie and Lynne Spears had planned to appear on his show for an "intervention special," calling his plans to do so "self-serving."
The TV therapist insisted that the Spears family had asked him to visit Britney at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The family didn't deny that, but said he violated "an invitation of trust" by releasing statements to the media.
Shortly after his brief visit, he said Britney was "in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention" and announced plans to address her problems on his show. According to Taylor, McGraw has never treated Britney.
On Monday, the doc canceled his plans for the episode, saying the situation was "too intense" to continue taping.
Taylor says Lynne and Jamie Lynn were just "looking for support here, not to add to the trouble that is already upon them."
